the lost in the woods meme
You forgot your compass, lost the map, took the instructions of that crazy old guy living in a log, or were just plain stupid and falling for every horror movie cliché. Someone mentioned that it wasn't raining, someone really insulted a psychopath squirrel, and whatever plans you had were utterly ruined. Or maybe, despite everything, it went along perfectly. Whatever happened, you’re lost in the woods and there doesn’t seem to be a quick way out. Will you get back onto the path easily, or will you stumble upon some trouble? Or not? Anything is possible!

PICNIC ✿ You had the perfect picnic spot in mind, and it was going to be a lovely afternoon, but you lost the map or took a wrong turn. Might as well find a decent spot somewhere before you get too hungry.
EXPLORING ✿ Everyone loves to explore the woods! Will you see deer or squirrels? Maybe find a creek you didn’t know about? Or lose sight of your house?
GAME ✿ You were playing paintball or hide and seek, but somehow, you lost your way and cannot find your way back to your friends. Hopefully they’re looking for you.
action
BATTLE ✿ Your worst enemy (or the latest criminal of the day) thinks that they can lose you in the woods, but they are totally wrong. But the woods are deeper and darker than you thought, and there are more dangers in it too.
HUNTING ✿ The woods are the perfect place to find a hiding spot for a criminal or someone else who might be running from you. But what is a haven could also be your undoing if you don’t know how to get out of there alive.
STRANGE SIGHTING ✿ Come on! You’re not going to let whatever that was get away, are you? Time to find that mysterious crash or that ghost, but you have only yourself to blame if you get into trouble and can’t get out of it.
LOOKING FOR CLUES ✿ Some sort of mystery is going on, from a ghost story to a jewel heist, and clues have led you to the woods. Will you find the hide out? A crime scene? More clues to reveal who or what is going on? Or just get more lost?
LEGEND ✿ There is a legend about these woods, and it’s always been a dare to go into them and see if you can find the truth behind it: a ghost, a creature, a god. But the thing is, no one ever got lost in the woods on the dare, and no one has ever found it before.
horror
BEING HUNTED ✿ You’re being hunted by a psychopath or something just as equally as horrifying. You have no other option but to go into the woods, but in your fear, you lost your way and you just might be heading back where you don’t want to go.
GHOSTS ✿ From ticking someone off to doing a taboo ritual, ghosts are out to get you. Can you lose them in the haunted forest or will you just meet your doom?
MONSTER CHASING ✿ A werewolf, the creature from the black lagoon, or a vampire, you are hunting down something not human with a vengeance. Wait. They might be hunting you, since you have no clue where you are in this dratted forest.
EVIL CABIN ✿ It was supposed to be a nice vacation, just a simple get away… but how were you supposed to know that a serial killer was vacationing there too? Or that it was cursed? Or something else that wants to kill you?
ANCIENT GROUNDS ✿ The tour guide told you not to step beyond those rocks for a reason! These were sacred grounds and now you have to face the wrath of ancient guardians. Can you lose them in the woods or figure out how to appease them?
comedy
EVERY ACCIDENT EVER ✿ You lost the map. The tents won’t go up. Someone broke their leg collecting firewood. Those leaves were poison ivy. You know the drill.
LOST THE MAP ✿ Was it that evil raccoon? Or perhaps you forgot it at the camp three miles back? Whatever the reason, you’ve decided that you’re just going to follow the trail wherever it goes, and it turned out to be your worst decision ever.
COMPASS IS WRONG ✿ The magnetic fields of the world is just messing with you now, sending you in a direction you didn’t want to go. But it might be a fun, if crazy, adventure. But is that the same bear you messed with earlier this morning?
WRONG DIRECTIONS ✿ We told you not to listen to that crazy old mountain man! Because instead of heading home, you’re up the wrong mountain.
ON PURPOSE ✿ Yes, you got lost on purpose. Not really, though. You just really wanted to pull a prank on your friends, or maybe get back at them.
romance
SURPRISE ✿ Did you bake them a ten foot high cake? Is it a surprise party? Or are you just being an awesome boyfriend or girlfriend? You have something planned in the forest and it’s going to be a wonderful day for everyone involved.
SECULUDED SPOT ✿ Everyone loves some place quiet and alone to be with their loved one. Hidden in the trees, a creek bubbling in the background, and stars above, there is nothing like going into the middle of nature to do nature things.
PROPOSAL ✿ On a hike, at the top of a difficult mountain to climb, in a field of flowers in the middle of the forest, a bunch trees can be just the spot to pop the question.
MAGICAL WONDER ✿ You have got to show someone this! A cave filled with crystals, a baby deer with its mother, a beautiful lake… They might not like the woods, but you’re dragging them with you to see this wonderful sight you can’t see in the city.
DATE ✿ It’s certainly different from movies and popcorn! Do you have a picnic set up? Is there fishing involved? Perhaps bird watching. Be creative!
bonus challenges
RAIN ✿ How many times do you have to see it in movies before you learn not to say, “At least it’s not raining?”
INJURY ✿ A sprained ankle, a concussion, maybe even a splinter. Any sort of injury is going to make an experience in the woods more miserable.
FOREST RANGER ✿ Is he friendly and goofy? Or just out to give you every ticket that you can be given in a forest? Either way, he won’t leave you alone.
WEIRD NOISE ✿ Yes, we know you’re hearing things. Wait, I think I heard it too. Is there something there, or are we just going insane?
STALKER ANIMAL ✿ This animal is just out to get you! Throwing acorns at any chance, determined to eat you… You just can’t scare it off!

ah, the inevitable dramatic plot twist, as is our wont... here's mine! :>
The way he is now, how could he ever expect to protect His Highness? Well, he'll address that question when they've reached safety. Right now, his primary concern is to protect Lana; he doesn't care too much what happens to him, but Lana still has something to live for... She still has a family -- a cousin, especially -- who would grieve if she were to perish. To spare them that heartache like he once (
still feels) had felt, he has to get her safely to Remire. ]...Lana. [ He spares a glance over his shoulder at the girl behind him. Something kind flickers in his eyes as he looks at her, before it quickly disappears as he returns his attention to the vicinity of the archer. ] Go.
[ He knows that someone like him is in no place to be giving orders, but the way he says it leaves no room for protest. ]
I...will meet up with you later.
[ And with axe in hand, he storms off in the direction that the arrow had come from, disappearing among the trees. ]
FCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOUTFUCK YOU
What's most shocking, perhaps, is that gentle look in his eye, directed at her for the briefest of moments. She's never seen Dedue's face in anything but his usual impassive, stoic expression, and she is momentarily stunned by the fact he'd choose her to show such kindess to. They weren't friends before, but maybe they could be now.
Unfortunately, though, she doesn't have time to ruminate on this turn of events, because she's very quickly having to re-evaluate her earlier assessment of Dedue Molinaro! He's kind, too kind, that's still true -- but right not he is also a colossal fool. ]
You absolute idiot! [ It's more of an exclamation to herself given the situation, but she can't help but voice her thoughts! As if she would leave without him! It takes a moment to gather herself, but then she's up on her feet and on his tail. ] Dedue! Dedue Molinaro! [ She's breaking out the full names, watch out. Despite the fear gripping her heart, of the enemy, of the flames (that, granted, she did set)... What frightens Lana the most right now is that she can't find him. ] Come back here this instant! I am not leaving without you!
ohoho, you have fallen into my trap
...
...
...
...At least, she is for a couple of minutes. After what may have felt like an eternity, there is some movement in the distance. A tall, shadowy figure emerges, wielding a large weapon in its hands. Could it be another bandit? Fortunately for Lana, it's not. As the figure steps forward, the illumination from the flames will show that it is none other than one (1) Dedue Molinaro. See, Lana, there's nothing to worry about! He's perfectly fine!
...Or is he? The bloodstains on his face and uniform suggest otherwise, but the blood dripping from the bit of his axe may imply a different story. ]
...I have returned.
[ But he doesn't approach her any further, standing a good distance away. He expects her to shun him, to scream at him to stay away from her, for he's a monster; if she didn't see him as how others view him -- his country, his culture, his people -- before, then she certainly would now, he thinks. How could he dare approach her now with blood on his hands -- quite literally, for that matter. ]
fun fact my bgm for this was rockefeller street nightcore ALSO IM SORRY THIS IS BIG I HAVE EMOTIONS
...
...
She tenses when his figure emerges from the brush, whirls around with anticipation, ready to blast a bandit with a well-aimed, exhausted Nosferatu, but the spell falls through her fingers in sheer relief when he comes close enough for her to recognise his figure. He might not be coming closer, but Lana certainly is; she nearly trips over her own boots in her dash to his side, furiously blinking back tears (from the smoke, or her emotions? It's probably a bit of both). ] You idiot! [ The stench of blood mixed with the smoke is awful, so awful, but Lana is running on auto-pilot from everything her mother had ever taught her about a healer's duty. That no matter how terrible, a healer must never, ever look away from her charge, and it's with this thought at the forefront of her mind that she grabs ahold of his hand and proceeds to tug him away from the destruction. ]
What were you thinking?! What if there had been more of them?! [ That's right Dedue, it's time for one of Lana's infamous, ear-blistering lectures. Just because you're injured doesn't mean you have an out. ] Did you really think I could just leave you? What kind of a person do you think I am? I'm a healer, Dedue Molinaro! Our job is to keep people safe and alive! Not run away while they throw themselves into danger for us! You're not cannon fodder, you're our friend! [ With this last outburst, complete with declaration of newfound friendsip, she seems to simmer down... At least for the moment. There's a long silence as she hurries them away from the smoke.
The sounds of the fire are finally growing dimmer, and so she draws them both to a stop at last and whirls around to finally face him, her face streaked with soot and tears. ] Sit down right this instant and show me all your injuries. You are not moving another inch until I have attended absolutely every ache and pain you have. [ Judging by the look on her face, she absolutely means it... Yet, she can't help but deflate now that everything is out of her system. ] ... Please, don't ever frighten me like that again. I can't bear to see you keep getting hurt for my sake...
guess you could say... we're 1273, down to rockefeller street of angst
Sure, she's screaming at him, but it's to chide him for his recklessness in rushing headfirst into battle against an unknown number of opponents, all because she was concerned for his well-being. All because she was, dare he say it, worried about him. It's all so foreign to him, so peculiar, that Dedue can't bring himself to say anything in response as she rightfully lashes out at him. The only other person who's shown him this kind of compassion before was His Majesty; most of the others in Fódlan regarded him warily and would not even dare to approach him unless absolutely necessary.
What's more is that...she even called him her friend. Though it's only been a few years since the massacre of his people, it feels like an eternity since someone last said that word to him. His Majesty had once spoken folly that he had brought him to the academy with him as a friend and not a vassal, but...he couldn't possibly rise above his station and presume to think of the crown prince as an equal with him. But Lana? While she wasn't of royalty, she was still nobility, and he couldn't dare to think that a commoner like him -- or worse, a traitor from Duscur -- could be friends with her.
So, while the thought of someone considering him as a friend makes him feel happy, his heart aches because he knows that it's nothing more than a pipe dream right now. (But perhaps in an ideal world, one where nobles and commoners could be equal, one where those from Fódlan and those from other nations could coexist, one where there was no longer any stigma towards people from Duscur, he would be able to return those words to her. He would be able to call her friend.)
As she draws them to a stop and turns to look at him, he feels a twinge of guilt within his chest at her tear-streaked face. If he had known that she would shed tears for him, then...he would have been more mindful than to charge blindly into danger. The fact that he had worried her so much makes him feel worse than having her waste her healing magic on him yet again, but he sits down as instructed. But before he begins to show her his injuries, he can't help but say one thing she well deserves to hear: ]
...My apologies for frightening you, Lana. That was...rather foolish of me.
[ At least he'll admit that much. However, it's not going to be that simple, unfortunately. ]
...But you need not concern yourself with someone like me. [ There's an undertone of I'm not worthy of it in his words. He doesn't have much else to live for aside from protecting His Majesty, and he would happily give his life if it meant that the prince could live on. But Dedue knows that if something were to happen to him, then no one would care; they wouldn't even bat an eye. His death would be well-deserved, they'd probably say.
He doesn't have any family or friends anymore who would weep for him; he doesn't even have a home that he can return to. At the very least, Lana still has both of those things, so if he can protect her even at the cost of his own life, then he'd do it without hesitation. That's all he can do with his meager existence to repay the one who would deign to show him such kindness and treat him like an equal. ] And...once we approach Remire, it would be in your best interest to go on ahead. [ ... ] It would not reflect well on you if you were seen associating with a person from Duscur.
[ Especially since they're not even in the same House. Unlike those from the Blue Lions, Lana has no reason to hang around him. ]
i had to hunt down lana's 3h au for this lmao
[ And she means it: Lana is furious. With Dedue for rushing off like that, with herself for putting him in this situation in the first place. Kneeling in front of him, her heart breaks. Blisters from the heat and cuts from who knows what else have formed over his visible skin. There's blood seeping somewhere else from under his uniform, too. He's just as ash-streaked as Lana is, maybe even more so. And with all of this in her sight, Lana feels so powerless. ]
Do you think me so cruel a person as to leave someone who risked his idiot life for me behind? To leave him in pain? I may not be much, sir, but I have told you I am a healer. I will not forsake a single life in front of me. Especially not one of someone kind enough to protect me. [ The tears are coming back now; perhaps a drop or two might fall on Deude's large and gentle hands as Lana takes them in hers, the gentle glow of a healing spell spreading from her fingertips to mend his aches. With her magic running low, contact during healing is best: this way she can focus it exactly where it needs to go. ] ... But I will accept your apology if you stop speaking to me like this. If not I will simply never forgive you and you'll be in my debt until you do. [ It's a little underhanded, maybe, but Lana is not above that. Her dearest uncle is a thief, for goodness sake. She's bound to have learned a few things from him.
In fact, in a certain sense... Dedue reminds her of someone. Her father, namely. The way he sacrificed himself immediately for her, spoke down about himself, as though he were lesser -- a mirror of her dear father! Just because of his common birth, even though her mother loved him! Lana's teeth grind together at the thought. Foolishly kind souls who have no idea of their own value, for people who shouldn't even be granted the time of day! ]
I will not be doing that, thank you very much. Unbutton your jacket, please. I need to see where else you're bleeding. [ Her tone leaves absolutely no room for argument. Her magic may have soothed the aches on his hands and arms, but she still has work to do. ] We can approach Remire as a man of Duscur and a Crestless lowborn, then. They can revile us all they like. They certainly haven't done anything to prove their value over us. [ A short, indignant pause. ] And I doubt even one of them would behave with as much integrity as you did today. You realise I quite possibly owe you my life, don't you?
